چکیده
Scleractinian corals associate with diverse microbial communities (e.g., Rowan 1998; Rohwer et al. 2001). Some eukaryotic microbes are common, well-known associates of corals; notably dinoflagellates of the genus Symbiodinium (e.g., Trench 1987), endolithic algae (e.g., Lukas 1974), and fungi (e.g., Bentis et al. 2000). Other eukaryotic associates have not received detailed study. Descriptions of these normal associations are a necessary first step towards identifying abnormal microbial associations (Le., pathogens) which lead to coral disease (Richardson 1998). Methods for molecular genetic analysis have revolutionized the study of marine microbes (e.g., Brinluneyer et al. 2000) and have proven useful in the study of coral microbial communities (e.g., Rowan 1998; Rohwer et al. 2001). Here we give a brief account of a coral-associated eukaryote which was identified by molecular methods during a bleaching experiment with the Caribbean coral Montastraea annularis (Toller et al. 2001a). This symbiont, provisionally named genotype N, was identified during routine screening of Symbiodinium samples by restriction fragment length polymorphism (RFLP) analysis of small subunit ribosomal RNA genes (srDNA). Our data indicate that genotype N represents

Protozoa of the genus Sarcocystis (phylum Apicomplexa, family Sarcocystidae) is one of the most common parasites affecting animals. Interspecies diagnostic of Sarcocystis genus was based on electron microscopy for many years. Because of absence of visible differences between species with reachable magnifications, light microscopy is useless. In many cases serological diagnostic method have lack...

Toxoplasma gondii is an obligate intracellular protozoan parasite classified in the phylum Apicomplexa, which includes numerous notable human and animal pathogens (Plasmodium species, Cryptosporidium species, Neospora caninum, etc.). The invasive stages of apicomplexans are characterized by the presence of an apical complex composed of specialized cytoskeletal and secretory organelles, includin...
متن کاملMolecular diversity of Symbiodinium spp. within six coral species in Larak Island, the Persian Gulf
Reef-building coral harbor communities of photosynthetic taxa of the genus Symbiodinium (zooxanthellae). The genus Symbiodinium is currently classified into nine genetic clades (A–I). Various corals harbor different Symbiodinium clades; some show specificity to a single strain. Coral and their zooxanthellae are sensitive to environmental stresses. In the Persian Gulf, coral reefs are subject to...
متن کاملFunctional and phylogenetic evidence of a bacterial origin for the first enzyme in sphingolipid biosynthesis in a phylum of eukaryotic protozoan parasites
Toxoplasma gondii is an obligate, intracellular eukaryotic apicomplexan protozoan parasite that can cause fetal damage and abortion in both animals and humans. Sphingolipids are essential and ubiquitous components of eukaryotic membranes that are both synthesized and scavenged by the Apicomplexa. Here we report the identification, isolation, and analyses of the Toxoplasma serine palmitoyltransf...
